The Chess badge was first introduced in 1989. It was the first staged badge (along with Short Tennis for Brownies) and was experimental. It was 44mm square and each level had a different design.
In 1991, the badge was redesigned and issued along with many other staged badges. These were smaller then the first set (33mm) and each level had the same design, with the level indicated in red:
